Episode 38
The Science of Safety with Dr. Matthew Hallowell
In this episode, Ted and Barb welcome Dr. Matthew Hallowell. Dr. Matthew Hallowell is a President’s Teaching Scholar and Endowed Professor of Construction Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned a BS and MS in Civil Engineering and a Ph.D. with a focus on Construction Engineering and Occupational Safety and Health. Before his academic career, he worked in construction as a laborer, project engineer, and quality inspector. His research, teaching, and consulting focuses on the prevention of serious injuries and fatalities in the workplace.
Dr. Hallowell shares about his work and ongoing and future projects. He is the Executive Director of the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA). It is a group of people from industry and academia working together to do research. They are trying to not just be an organization that points at the problems but also to come up with solutions.
One part of his job at the university is research, the other part is teaching, and he has the opportunity to teach students about safety as an integrating component of design.
Dr. Hallowell is also the Executive Director of Safety Function, a firm that specializes in evidence-based safety services. This company allows him to translate research to practice – he serves as a technical advisor when companies need workshops and he helps them implement new findings into practice.
